How to wear: Sports Luxe

I love the idea of being able to add a subtle sporty twist to my looks this Spring, and what’s great about this trend is that you don’t necessarily need to invest in a whole new wardrobe to nail it. Instead you’ll find that investing in a few sports inspired pieces can be easily mixed and matched with other items in your wardrobe, but what are the best items to invest in?

Here are a few I’m hoping to buy this SS14…

Oversized Jersey Tees

These look amazing in bold, vibrant hues (especially blues, reds, yellows and greens) giving a not so subtle nod towards the likes of American Football. I personally love this look teamed with a pair of high sandals, as it gives it a more feminine edge, but it would also look great paired with a pair of skater shoes or high tops for more of a tomboy edge!

Mesh

From a casual tee with slight mesh detailing (try tucking into a feminine pleated skirt for a great contrast), sheer paneling on a skirt or a mesh racer-back bra peeking out from under a dress, this trend is another, more subtle, nod towards traditional sportswear, if not sexier.

Skater Shoes

Okay, so let’s be honest, those Celine skater shoes are the reason skater shoes are even back on the fashion agenda, but luckily for my bank account the high street are full of Celine inspired skate shoes.. Phew!! Make sure you nail it by getting them with thick white soles, and then pick any colour (or pattern) you like- skater shoes go with almost everything. I think I’ll be opting for classic black, wearing them with some ripped boyfriend jeans!

Runner Shorts

With a slightly looser fit these shorts are a great take on ‘sports luxe’, although they are short, and not necessarily for everyday wear they are so versatile- any colour and material looks great, not forgetting you can wear them with heels or flats. For an edgier look go for black leather or a dark metallic satin pair, or for a softer touch, pastels are a perfect alternative! Another great way to wear your runner shorts is to buy a matching cropped tee or vest- co-ords always add a youthful glow to a look and will definitely sweeten up the sporty vibe.

Proenza Schouler at NYFW

The designers at Proenza Schouler emphasised the importance of both fun and humour behind their collections before their show in New York, and this definitely shone through in their bold clashing prints. In previous seasons the designers had moved away from the prints they had become known for, but for their AW collection it was good to see their vibrant, fun side make an appearance-sometimes it works for designers to stick to what they do best.

With a strong safari theme throughout, the collection saw a whole host of clashing animal prints in both monochrome and bright, bold hues of mainly blues, greens and blood red, with hints of pink and orange also making a rare appearance. It was not just colours and prints that were mixed together though, as the collection saw a brilliant clash of textures too, the most impressive being a boxy patchwork dress that mixed both black leather with blood red suede. It was such boxy, oversized shapes-seen in the rounded shoulders of jackets and tops-  that gave the collection a masculine edge (as well as those chunky two toned loafers), which was softened by combining these more masculine elements with more fitted skirts and dresses, as well as the use of soft roll neck sweaters and the cinching in of oversized shapes at the waist.

The collection was obviously all about the layering of thick, chunky textures (those spongey jacquard jackets), vibrant colours and contrasting patterns, which is a great way to look at dressing for the colder months! It shouldn’t be about dull colours, but feeling warm and cosy in rich, opulent textures and prints (think a boxy dress over the top of a fitted long sleeve). And definitely don’t forget to layer up on your accessories either-this collection put lots of chunky rings on each hand, even matching them to an equally beautiful clutch bag!

Winter Whites

White may seem a bit scary for those of you who think this color is best kept for the warmer months, sure, its fresh and crisp and brightens up an outfit but what about during the AW months?  White can actually be worn in a really cozy way, but if you’re still not convinced, read on for my top five ways to wear whites this winter!

Cool Grays

White mixed with cool grey shades can be an underestimated color combo, but actually gives a very soft and feminine feel to a look! These colors are at their best when textures like soft cashmere and silks are mixed together- think a soft, white, cashmere sweater over the top of a knee length, cool grey, silk slip or even a gray vinyl skirt? Absolutely gorgeous, and great for work or play, too! You might even decide to incorporate grays into your look by adding a pair of grey ankle boots or a squashy clutch, as seen at Celine, to dress up the look even more!

Playful Pastels

It’s no secret that pastels are one of my favorite trends this season, adding a feminine, but playful, charm to any ensemble! It may be that you go simple when adding such colors (think a pair of ice blue cocktail earrings against a soft white sweater or silk blouse) or you may choose to go a bit bolder (how about a silk, mint green blouse against a silky soft, white pencil skirt?), but whatever way you decide to incorporate pastel shades it is safe to say that a little pop of color can go a long way in bringing an outfit to life!

Celine

The Metallic Edge

Well, mainly silver, but a little gold or even metallic burgundy shades can also work wonders! Personally I do think silver looks a little better than gold as it simulates that icy feeling we get during the colder months (and look a lot classier), but then adding a pointed, platformed  gold shoe to a look can also be a great touch to a white dress! This way of wearing white is quite well suited to the more dressier of occasions, and what better way to start that by trying it out during the best party season of AW-Christmas!! One tip though, keep metallic touches to a minimum, because too much and it may begin to look a little tacky- try adding it through jewelry, clutch bags or shoes for a classier look!

Burberry Prorsum

Classic Navy

Navy and white contrast against each other brilliantly and definitely add an element of class to any look. Navy is such a strong, bold color that it offsets well against the sharp, crisp edge of white. This is great for work attire (although this doesn’t mean it is not as versatile as the other color combo’s), try teaming a fitted white dress with a navy pea coat or a pair of smart white trousers with a silky navy shirt or sweater!

Celine

Monochrome

And, of course, we all know the classic black and white combo, so if you’re not bold enough to try the other looks then at least give this one a try! And this requires the most minimal effort, because you can grab a monochrome print in dresses, sweaters, pants, anything really!

Proenza Schouler

So you have no excuses not to try white this season, in fact, you’ve probably already tried it out without even realizing, but don’t let this deter you from further experimentation!

All White Everything

White is always an amazing colour to have in your Spring/Summer wardrobe. Its crisp, bright, goes with everything and adds that little bit of class. But this season a new type of white has appeared; Head to Toe.

ImageVera Wang, 2013

I have had my eye on a head to toe all white ensemble for a very long to time. Am I gutsy enough to actually go ahead and buy one? As of yet, no. But I’ve come to realise that this trend is not actually as scary as it looks, which is why I think I might be braving it this Summer. There are so many different ways to wear this trend that no-one has an excuse to shy away! Still not inspired? Read on to see how you can wear it this summer.

WHITE ON WHITE

Feeling brave? Team white with even more white: Image

KEEPING IT NEUTRAL

Still not feeling brave enough? Try teaming an all white outfit with some off white shades like cream or go darker with tan accessories to contrast against the striking white head to toe look.

COLOUR POP

Be very careful with this one, you want to uphold the class of the all white look, so don’t go too crazy with bright colours. You could accent the white with a gorgeous teal colour in the form of a clutch bag, a chunky jewelled necklace or even some strappy sandals.

ImageOkay, so Kim K has made some questionable style choices over the last few months (being pregnant and all that) but the above is a perfect example of adding a pop of colour to an all white outfit. And a bright sunny yellow is bang on trend this season. Why not take on two trends in one go?

MAKE IT MONOCHROME

Black and white together will always be a perfect match so if you aren’t feeling quite so brave you can always add black accents to the outfit. I recommend taking inspiration from Moschino’s SS13 collection- the perfect amount of black that maintains that all white look with an added twist.
