Menswear SS15: Women inspiring Men

We always see some designers going for more masculine tailoring or incorporating a tomboy charm into their collections for Women, but in the more recent shows for Menswear SS15 I’ve spotted several, typically female trends, taking over the catwalks. From prints and colours to clothing and accessories there is no escaping the idea that Menswear has been influenced by many of our own, more feminine trends, and not just by one or two designers either, but a whole host of collections have hinted towards more feminine trends in some shape or form. 

So, firstly you may remember that AW13/14 was the season that welcomed all of those yummy pastel shades, from lilac cashmere coats at Carven to sugary pink hues at Topshop Unique.. well that trend is about to hit menswear in a huge way for SS15. Pastel shades and candy hues are not typically associated with Menswear, a hint of it here and there perhaps, but for SS15 be prepared for head to toe pastels.

Or how about open toed boots? They’ve been around a while for women, but can this Balmain pair, inspired by 70’s sporting icons, make them just as popular with men, too?

Oh, and speaking of footwear for men, do you remember me blogging a while back about Jelly Shoes making a come back for women? Well, I’ve officially spotted them in a range of colours for men at the huntergather menswear show for SS15..

We’ve seen so many styles of bags for men on the catwalks, but how about clutch bags for men?

Motivational Messages

Now, I’m all for the funny and quirky slogans emblazoned across tees and sweatshirts, but recently I’ve been loving the more motivational, thought provoking messages, too. Not only are they a little more sophisticated than the usual phrases we’re seeing (although I love these, as well) but I love how versatile they are dressed up or dressed more casually.

Here are a few of my faves 🙂

I’ve recently discovered the streetwear brand ‘Acrylick’– literally all of their items have a motivational meaning or slogan and I love that! My favourite is ‘Only dead fish swim with the current’- okay it is for men (they have a women’s collection, too) but in a small size I think this would look great on us girls too!

I LOVE the message here- it comes from Pharrell Williams’ collab with Uniqlo ‘i am OTHER‘, where he encourages innovation amongst today’s youth!
Okay, we all know I love to talk about Kenzo– here they are promoting the protection of the world’s ocean in a collab with The Blue Marine Foundation! Such a great way to influence their young fashion following!

What did I miss: A Paris fashion week catch up

So, I was lucky enough to get away to Dublin at the beginning of March, but this obviously meant I had less time (and less wifi access) to blog about the goings on at Paris Fashion Week! So, what did I miss?

1. Kenzo grew up.

Gone were the statement sweatshirts and logo emblazoned attire-although they kept their youthful edge via bold prints and bright colours, this season Kenzo brought us a tougher edge in the form of oversized shapes and strong tailoring.

   

2. Phoebe Philo gave us even more coats to lust after.

I’m still not over that pink coat, but the the most recent show from Celine gave us even more coats to desire, and this time we saw so much assortment I’m not even sure I can pick a favorite. The question is which one will bring me most inspiration for next AW? Will it be the camel coat? The double breasted button up? Or maybe the more boyish, oversized kind?

      

3. Chloe remained pretty, as ever.

With nudes, soft pastel hues and the odd pop of bright colour towards the end of the collection, the pallete at the most recent Chloe show did wonders to produce a whimsical, feminine collection. With simple shapes and feminine lines (and gold hardware thrown in for good measure, of course) the Chloe collection was what I imagine every Chloe collection to be -ultra feminine, flirtatious and youthful. We saw beautifully draped blush pink coats, silky, layered slip dresses, chunky knits, and, not forgetting, the appearance of soft culotte pants that seemed to look amazing with absolutely everything. I’ll just take one of everything, please..

                  

4. I will always love Elie Saab.

Always giving us beautiful, elegant collections, I just can’t get enough of the amazing gowns (and everything else, actually) that the designers behind this collection manage to produce. The colours this season (think warming berry tones, blush pink and teal), bold floral print, embroidered detail and glamorous furs all made for a rich and luxurious collection!

 

5. Grocery shopping- Chanel style

I’m sure we all know about this- Karl Lagerfeld turning the Grand Palais into one big Chanel supermarket. We saw sugary sweet tweed suits, metallic jeans, lace up flat boots and some amazing arm candy- but although I loved some of the looks on show, not all of it was that inspiring, even with the super cool supermarket layout.

  

NY Fashion Week: Street Style Predictions

Okay, so we all look forward to the runway shows, but how will the heavy snow that has hit New York effect the street style of the fashion elite across the next few days? Below are a few predictions of what we can expect from street style as it prepares to fight off the bitter NY cold.

Lots of layering

The infamous ‘street style’ at NY fashion week will have to adapt to the colder weather, but don’t expect them to ‘layer up’ in a conventional way. Think oversized woolen coats on top of another coat, a furry vest acting as a unique take on  a scarf underneath a blazer or even the doubling up of scarves.

Furry Accessories

I predict lots of furry Fendi mittens, as well as fur vests, coats, hats.. anything warm and furry to fight off the bitter NY cold and look glamorous whilst doing it.

Sweatshirts

Making a huge comeback for a great ‘I just threw this on’ look, these will definitely be on show throughout fashion week, especially those with friends at Kenzo who bag early access to their fish inspired sweatshirts, which aren’t actually available to purchase until the end of February.

Over-sized Woolen Coats

It seems obvious, I know, but despite that pink Celine coat being huge, I actually expect a rainbow oversized woolen coats,too, because wearing that pink coat would be just too obvious, wouldn’t it?

Hunter Wellies

Maybe this is a British thing, but it wouldn’t surprise me if somebody turned up in a pair of these, especially after the brand has been given it’s own runway slot later on in the month for London Fashion Week. It is snowing, surely somebody will dress practically for the event?

New Season Loubs

For those NY fashion forward ladies who refuse to let the snow come between them and looking good in a pair of glossy new Louboutins. We’re likely to see the updated Pigalle, Princess or even the Louis sneaker on show over the next few days (just think glitter, pastels and vibrant hues).

Under the Sea with Kenzo & The Blue Marine Foundation

Living in a profit driven society means it is refreshing to find brand names who, not only donate to charity, but help raise awareness of certain issues. Fashion is an especially powerful tool when influential fashion houses use their creativity and unique designs to create collections that speak volumes about the issues in society. The most recent collaboration that we have seen across the SS14 catwalks is between Kenzo and The Blue Marine Foundation, a charity who aim to create sustainable fishing, marine reserves and therefore protect 10 per cent of the world’s oceans by 2020. Kenzo’s Carol Lim and Humberto Leon have said they are ‘extremely excited about this long-term partnership’ and, although they reviewed many different charities they would like to work with, they believe working with The Blue Marine Foundation was a ‘perfect match’. As you may have seen on their SS14 catwalk show and campaign there were major hints towards the ocean and sustainability of sea life with strong messages such as ‘No Fish, No Nothing’ and water inspired prints across their collection. It may not seem hugely influential, but just think, Kenzo have a huge fashion following and the impact they can have upon the minds of the youth of today is of huge importance.

    

Why we love: Unisex Sweaters

Gone are the days when it was only acceptable for a girl to throw on her boyfriend’s sweater for lazy days around the house, because now a girl can buy an oversized sweater all for herself, wearing it whenever she likes. Okay, so it doesn’t have to be ‘unisex’, you can buy oversized sweaters for women too, but streetwear brands like Kenzo, Patta and Boy London have all echoed that it’s okay for us women to throw on a sweatshirt and look cool; we can now achieve effortless street style by throwing on a sweatshirt (high street or designer) with a pair of rolled up boyfriend jeans and its acceptable. Women are buying sweaters from streetwear brands from the men’s department in order to pull off that casual streetwear vibe, but that obviously doesn’t mean you can’t add a feminine touch or two! Think clashing prints, statement necklaces, a pop of collar underneath or coordinate colours with one of this season’s must have skirt styles!

Eye Spy with Kenzo

So I’m assuming we all remember that sweater (and coat, pants, blouses..) at Kenzo’s AW13 show that was emblazoned with their ‘Lotus Eye’ print?

Well, the thing about Kenzo is that creating such casual, not so serious, pieces has made it one of the few collections that bloggers not only admire, but actually go out and purchase (despite the price tag)! Kenzo doesn’t redefine fashion with extravagant designs and silhouettes, but keeps it simple enough that their collection becomes relatable and eventually represents that ‘street style’ we see in magazines!


You see, I WANT that lotus print sweater (and the tiger one…), because I can imagine it paired with items I already have in my wardrobe! I also WANT that matching ‘Petal’ print tee and pant- it’s pretty and simple , but different enough for me to stand out from the crowd! Don’t get me wrong, I also want most things I see across runways (that Celine coat, those heavily embellished dresses at D&G…) but Kenzo is just so much more relatable!

This got me thinking though, what will their standout piece be for SS14? This season it was the lotus eye sweater… but what about next season?

Well, I’ve had a look and I’ve made my predictions…
