Sexy, smudged lips at Vivienne Westwood

Okay, so Vivienne Westwood doesn’t always bring us the most wearable looks, but she certainly finds new ways to encapsulate the Vivienne Westwood woman every season.

This time we saw smudged red lips and flushed cheeks- a subtle hint that there is perhaps a more mischievous side to the Vivienne Westwood woman, a woman who dresses in such smart, luxuriously tailored attire, but is not quite as well behaved as what first meets the eye.

I love the sexy, mysterious quality that such a simple make up look has created, and although smudging lipstick around the outside of your lips may not be a good idea in reality, I am very tempted to try and recreate the look in a more wearable way.

Gosh Long Lasting Lip Marker Red 2
Instead of perfectly appl ying red lipstick in a way that adds a bold pop of colour to the lips, why not try using a lip stain or pen instead. I use the Gosh Long Lasting Lip Marker in Red (Cruelty free and the most long lasting lip product I’ve ever owned) making sure to smudge across the lips with your fingertips straight away before it has time to stain. For extra smudge and dimension I may even blend a touch of the Gosh Long Lasting Lip Marker in Berry Red in the centre of the lips.

CALLA at NYFW

It was only last year that designer Calla Haynes first showed her collection during NYFW, and yesterday the designer was back again to show off yet another vibrant collection. Haynes is known for her strong print designs, which is why it came as no surprise to see a collection full of bold clashing prints, a nod towards ‘relaxed luxury’, as the designer herself describes her collection. The designer has managed to create a modern twist on ‘easy to wear’ fashion, by mixing quirky prints with more classic ones, like plaid and bright florals, which has led to a youthful, yet luxurious, collection.

Alberta Ferretti SS14

The runway shows for SS14 had some standout designers for me this year, but my absolute favourite show has to be Alberta Ferretti, simply for it’s colour, femininity and playful charm. The styles weren’t too complex, but instead gave pretty and youthful looks that are easy to wear (and copy, for those of us who can only dream of buying the real thing). Maybe I was more drawn to her collection, because of the way it reflected glorious summer days through white broderie anglaise, brightly coloured embroidery (and ribbon), pretty florals and candy stripes-an absolute dream for the ultimate ‘girly girl’ like me!

So, below is a run down of the main elements of the show- a must read, because it was such a beautiful show- so, enjoy!

White and Brights

White chiffon and broderie anglaise dresses, blouses and skirts were mixed with brightly coloured embroidery, ribbons and florals in a rainbow of colours, giving a pretty, youthful glow.

Summer Brights

From fiery reds and oranges to leafy greens and cobalt blues, these chiffon dresses, bright sandals, and ruffle skirts were reminiscent of summer evenings, especially with that gorgeous floral embroidery (a lovely thought on such a drab December morning).

Pretty Patterns

Think candy stripes and pretty florals in skirts and dresses, both long and short, cropped blouses and bralets in silks and chiffons. Although this all sounds like a playful take on Spring/Summer, the patterns at this show gave polished and feminine finish, but still managed to keep it’s youthful edge!

Black is Back

The darker side to SS14 is of course the colour black in the form of silky ruffle skirts, lace dresses and sheer materials, with Ferretti’s added twist of coloured floral embroidery. Although I try and steer clear of black during Spring/Summer usually, Ferretti has changed my opinion a little. If it’s teamed with a colour pop of embroidery or a pair of bright sandals then it can really transform a look, although that doesn’t mean to say her all black lace ensembles are any less beautiful!

It’s Never Too Cold for Sunny Yellow!

So the colder weather has snuck up on us here in the UK, and I think we are all guilty of packing away our brightly coloured clothes and replacing them with dull, dreary shades of blacks, greys and browns. Although an all black look can be super classy, I love the idea of a colour pop, and in this case the gorgeous hues of yellow come to mind, because it helps bring an element of sunshine to a dreary winter’s day!

Adding a splash of yellow to an outfit can not only brighten it up but also adds a carefree, fun outlook on how you dress. For example, the looks at Betsey Johnson embraced the colour yellow, by mixing it with other brights like blue and pink. If you go for such a bright yellow shade, do not shy away but instead make sure you ooze confidence, just like the models at Betsey Johnson. The best thing about such a bold look is that it allows you to experiment and stand out amongst a crowd full of grey dreary colours.

With this said, you do not necessarily have to choose such a bold yellow shade and instead could take inspiration from the Ellie Saab show, where a more subdued yellow tone was used. A much more feminine look can be achieved when combined with lace dresses, embroidery and silk skirts for an elegant take on the sunny yellow trend. It is not bold like at Betsey Johnson, but instead pretty and feminine for those of us who maybe aren’t as experimental with bright colours.

Still finding it difficult to part with your beloved black winter pieces? Why not combine them with a dash of yellow for an edgier look? For example, Michael Kors combined a darker yellow shade with black to create a sports luxe inspired collection that looked amazing!

And if you’re still feeling shy then why not go for a yellow accessory, like the handbags shown at Chloe, that will make a great contrast against almost any colour, be it a winter grey or a bold pink.

Whichever way you choose to wear yellow this season you can be certain that it is appropriate for all occasions and is adaptable for all styles, be it sporty, girly or edgy!
